Back to School Project
Back in Full Swing for 2009 - 2010 School Year
Register July 1st - 31st at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank

The Back to School Project began in 1994 as a nonprofit organization. The mission of the project is to provide new school supplies to families in Black Hawk County that need assistance. Students who receive new school supplies can be proud to go back to school with the same supplies as every other student.

The primary goal of the project is to assist as many students as possible with the help of the community. To accomplish this goal, project coordinator Ruth Orth asks for help from the community in raising funds and collecting supplies each year. Every monetary donation or donation of supplies helps the project. Last year, the Back to School Project provided school supplies to over 2,000 students.

The organization has no paid staff, so volunteer help is also necessary to make the project a success. In July, volunteers give their time at the registration site located at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. Parents are required to register their students in order to receive supplies. In August, others help to collect, sort and inventory supplies. Many volunteers are needed in the final week to prepare individual sacks of supplies to meet each student's needs. Volunteers also help on distribution day to make sure that all the students receive their supplies.

To qualify for the Back to School Project, students must attend school in Black Hawk County. Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade are eligible. Students must be registered to ensure that they receive the supplies requested by their school for their grade. Registration takes place during the month of July at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

If you have any questions, please call Ruth at 319-240-7470. Monetary donations can be mailed to Back to School Project, P.O. Box 2334, Waterloo, IA 50704. School supplies may be dropped off at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
